Chidori High, a boys' school predominantly attended by students with low grades, is loathed by Kikyo Girls' High, whose pupils mostly come from wealthy and prestigious families. Although the two schools are right next to each other, the curtains in the windows are always closed, and the students have never seen inside the other school's classrooms. Chidori student Rintaro Tsumugi has always had an intimidating appearance, so as other people have avoided him, he too has distanced himself from others.
One day, while Rintaro is helping at his family's patisserie, he meets a girl named Kaoruko, who tells him she has never once thought of him as "scary."
Despite some confusion, Rintaro starts to feel comfortable spending time with Kaoruko, who treats him without prejudice — but he soon discovers that she is a student at Kikyo.
